If you're trying to quit Planet Fitness, you aren't doing anything wrong—they design the process to be as high-friction as legally possible. Because Planet Fitness is a franchise, corporate forces individual owners to handle member retention at the local level.
This means you usually cannot just log into an app and hit "Cancel." However, following new FTC guidelines passing in 2025/2026, some locations are finally introducing online cancellations. Here are the three ways to cancel your membership right now.
Method 1: Attempt the Online Portal
Depending on your state's laws (particularly if you live in California or New York), Planet Fitness may be legally required to offer you an online cancellation option if you originally signed up online.
- Log into your account at PlanetFitness.com.
- Navigate to the My Account section.
- Look for a prompt that says Manage Membership or Cancel Membership.
If you only see an option to "Transfer" your home club, your franchise does not support online cancellation. You must proceed to Method 2.
Method 2: Send a Certified Letter (The Best Way)
If you moved away or simply refuse to face a retention employee at the front desk, sending a certified letter is the bulletproof legal way to severe your contract.
Copy the Letter Template
We've drafted the legal standard language. Copy the template below and fill in your bracketed details.
Go to the Post Office
Ask the postal worker to send your envelope via USPS Certified Mail. This will cost about $4-$5, but it provides a legally binding tracking number proving Planet Fitness received your letter.
Method 3: Cancel In-Person
This is the fastest method, though it requires dealing with a human. Walk up to the front desk at your specific Home Club and state you need to cancel. They will print a cancellation form. Demand a physical copy of the signed cancellation form before you leave the building. Do not accept "we will email it to you later" as an answer.
Important Note on Fees and Cutoff Dates
- The 10th of the Month: Most PF billing cycles hit around the 17th. You must cancel by the 10th of the month to avoid being charged for that specific month.
- Annual Fee Cutoff: To avoid the massive $49 annual fee, you must cancel by the 25th of the month prior to your annual billing date.
- The $58 Buyout: If you signed a 12-month commitment (often the Black Card) and are cancelling early, the club will charge a $58 early termination fee to process the cancellation.
