Adobe's pricing model is notoriously unforgiving. The vast majority of people sign up for what looks like a monthly plan, only to realize the fine print stated it was an "Annual plan, paid monthly."
When you attempt to cancel this plan before month 12, Adobe hits you with an Early Termination Fee (ETF) equal to 50% of the remaining contract balance. That can easily be hundreds of dollars. Because of a massive 2026 Department of Justice settlement against Adobe, however, things are starting to change.
Method 1: The Famous "Switch-Plan" Loophole
This has been the go-to Reddit method for years. (Note: Adobe occasionally patches this, but many users in 2026 report it still works).
Adobe's policy is that any *new* subscription gives you a 14-day cooling-off period where you can cancel for a full refund. The trick is to switch your expensive plan to a cheap one, resetting the clock.
Navigate to Manage Plan
Sign in at account.adobe.com. Find your current Creative Cloud subscription and click Manage plan.
Click "Change Plan" (NOT Cancel)
Do NOT click Cancel plan yet. Click Change plan. The system will ask you what you want to switch to.
Select the Cheapest Option
Switch to the cheapest possible plan you can find (usually Adobe InCopy or Photography, which are roughy $5/month). Accept the changes.
Wait 24 Hours, then Cancel
Wait a few hours or a day. Log back into Adobe. Navigate to your new $5 plan and hit Cancel plan. Because you are within the 14-day window of this "new" contract, Adobe will refund you the $5 and cancel the account completely free of charge.
Method 2: The DOJ Negotiation Approach
If the plan switch loophole is blocked on your account, your next best bet is entering Live Chat with an agent.
In mid-2026, Adobe finalized a massive settlement with the United States FTC and Department of Justice specifically regarding these hidden Early Termination Fees. Customer support reps are currently highly authorized to waive the fee if you apply slight pressure.
- Start a live chat with Adobe Support and explicitly ask to cancel.
- When they mention the ETF, reply politely but firmly: "I cannot afford this fee. Furthermore, the terms of the annual commitment were not clearly disclosed to me at checkout, which is the exact deceptive practice the FTC and DOJ cracked down on in their recent settlement. I am asking you to waive this termination fee as a customer goodwill exception."
- In 90% of cases, the frontline rep will immediately waive the fee and process the cancellation.
Never get trapped in an annual contract again
Annual contracts disguised as monthly plans are the oldest trick in the book. Trackery lets you log exactly which type of contract you're locked into, warning you before your window closes.
